Talk: Stephen Oxford will trace the development of the 62 public houses in Norwood that were built between 1600 and 1905. Included will be numerous illustrations, fascinating facts and anecdotes as well as a brief history of public houses in England.

Social: Society members are cordially invited to join us for the annual Christmas Social event at Upper Norwood Library, 39 Westow Hill, London SE19 1TQ. We look forward to seeing you there. Activities include a Norwood Quiz and members are invited to bring, show and tell us about an item of historical interest. There will be refreshments including wine and donations are welcome. There is no talk in December.

Talk: Jenny Rossiter provides an historical perspective as to why we are more familiar with pioneering women of north rather than south London and offer a glimpse of mountaineers, artists, architects, actors, politicians, doctors, nurses, novelists, theatre directors, social reformers and campaigners - all of them women who have lived, worked, or set up organisations within Lambeth.

Talk: A talk by former private pilot Clare Walker about Britain’s ferry pilots. During World War II, 1,245 men and women flew as ferry pilots in the Air Transport Auxiliary, delivering 308,000 aircraft.

Talk: Michael Gilbert will take us back to London in 1951 and tell us how the successful Festival of Britain, which attracted 8.5 million visitors to the South Bank, helped lift the gloom of post-war Britain.

Talk: Stephen Oxford unravels the tale of the extremely late arrival of the letter from Christabel Mennell to Catherine Marsh. They both lived locally and their fascinating family stories will be outlined in this talk. Followed by the Norwood Society AGM and refreshments.

Talk: A talk by Dr James Nye for the Norwood Society. Dr Nye, founder of the West Norwood Clockworks museum has been involved in clocks since the age of fourteen, he explains how the desire for universal and accurate time was achieved and how illuminated clocks, such as Big Ben were invented by Jonathan Paine.
